Energy Efficiency Grant Program

This program is designed to provide support for commercial building and business owners to invest in projects and initiatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions in their place of business in Mount Pearl.

Eligibility

This program supports a variety of energy efficiency improvements to business operations/structures. The project must support more than just maintenance improvements and might include the following:

  • Energy Efficient Lighting.
  • Solar Panels (connection to NL Power net metering).
  • Fuel Switching from Fossil Fuels to Less GHG-Intensive Fossil Fuels or Renewable Energy.
  • Improvements to the Envelope of a Building.
  • Plumbing Fixture Upgrades (such as low-flow toilets and low-flow faucet aerators).
  • Installation of Bike Racks or Other Projects that Promote Sustainable Commuting.
  • Other Proposed Project (If the applicant proposes an initiative that falls outside of the preceding list of eligible projects, the applicant must explain how the project reduces green house gas emissions and must provide proof of reduction upon project completion).

Scaled Tax Program

The City of Mount Pearl is growing to meet the future head on and is committed to supporting new business growth. The Scaled Taxation Program provides new businesses with financial incentives to establish roots in Mount Pearl. The program is tailored to non-competing companies in the Craft, Retail, and Technology sectors and is designed to support the creation of new employment opportunities in our city.

This program is now extended to include ANY new business opening in the Find Your Centre – City Centre Plan area.

How it works

Financial assistance will be in the form of a 4-year scaled tax break based on the assessed business tax value of the proposed company. The city will award up to $5,000 per year to each approved applicant in the form of annual tax incentives. The tax incentive will be distributed as follows:

  Business Pays City Provides
Year 1 20% 80%
Year 2 40% 60%
Year 3 60% 40%
Year 4 80% 20%
Year 5 100% 0%

Eligibility

The program will be available by application only to businesses who:

  • Operate a business in either the Craft, Retail, or Technology industry sectors (see program guidelines for sector definitions)
  • Other sectors may be approved at City Council’s discretion if the business can demonstrate a viable impact on the community
  • Have submitted a new business application or occupancy permit with the City of Mount Pearl and have no other locations or franchisers
  • Are within 3 years of business incorporation
  • Have no outstanding debts to the city
  • Is a registered business with Service NL (or in application process) and with the Government of Canada

Applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and are approved at City Council’s discretion. Other industry sectors may be considered if it provides a viable economic impact on the community.

Façade Improvement Program

Looking to improve the look and feel of your business or building? The City of Mount Pearl is now offering Façade Improvement Grants equivalent to 50% of total project costs and up to a maximum of $10,000!

Basic Eligibility Requirements

  • Currently registered business or commercial property in Mount Pearl with no outstanding debts to the city
  • The commercial property must be adjacent to the street/sidewalk with orientation towards the street
  • The proposed improvement must improve the physical attributes of the façade
  • The applicant must be the building owner(s) or their designate
  • Must clearly identify in application the economic viability of the project and the benefits it will provide to the community
  • Must be located in an Economic Development Focus Area (see map below) or by discretion of City Council

The project must support more than just maintenance improvements and can include improvements to the following:

  • Exterior architectural and esthetic features
  • Architecture and design fees
  • Doors and windows
  • Exterior lighting
  • Awnings and canopies
  • Signage (electrical connections, brackets, pinning, etc.)
  • Landscaping (must be a capital cost)
  • Patio and outdoor seating
  • Cleaning and painting
  • Restoration
