The Mount Pearl Focus on Youth Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements, leadership, and community spirit of young people in our city. This annual event recognizes youth who are making a positive impact—whether through volunteerism, athletics, arts, academics, or meaningful contributions that promote kindness, inclusion, and community well-being.
The awards were created to highlight the vital role youth play in shaping Mount Pearl’s future. By showcasing their accomplishments, we aim to inspire other young people, foster a culture of leadership, and encourage continued engagement in community life.
Each year, individuals, groups, and organizations are invited to nominate youth who demonstrate dedication, resilience, and a commitment to making a difference. Recipients represent the diversity of talent and passion found across Mount Pearl and serve as role models for their peers.

807 Mount Pearl Kinsmen Royal Canadian Air Cadets
The 807 Mount Pearl Kinsmen Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron is an outstanding youth organization whose commitment to citizenship, leadership, and community service has made a meaningful impact throughout Mount Pearl. Composed of dedicated young cadets aged 13 to 18, the squadron provides structured training that emphasizes responsibility, teamwork, and personal development while fostering a strong sense of civic pride.
Over the past year, the squadron has been deeply engaged in community service initiatives and ceremonial events. Cadets proudly represented Mount Pearl at the Battle of Britain commemorations, the Canada Day Parade, and Cenotaph ceremony, and the annual Santa Claus Parade. They also took part in the Mount Pearl 20 Minute Makeover, contributing hands-on effort to improve and care for their local environment. These visible acts of service demonstrate the cadets’ respect for history, community, and shared responsibility.
Beyond public events, the squadron has shown strong compassion for vulnerable populations. Cadets organized food drives in support of local food banks and collected personal care items for Thrive Community Youth Network. Through these initiatives, they not only provided tangible support to those in need but also strengthened their own understanding of empathy, service, and social responsibility. Monthly citizenship activities further reinforce these values, ensuring that community involvement is an ongoing commitment rather than a one-time contribution.
The cadets devote an impressive amount of time to their training and service, often committing ten or more hours per week to regular meetings, leadership development, competitions, and volunteer activities. Many exceed this commitment by taking on leadership roles and participating in additional training opportunities. Their dedication has resulted in both individual and collective success, including numerous awards recognizing excellence in leadership, citizenship, physical fitness, and military-style training. Notably, the squadron’s Marksmanship Team earned the Gordon Morris Shield for Top Marksmanship Team in Newfoundland and Labrador for the seventh consecutive year.

Alex Taylor – WINNER: Youth Opportunity Fund Volunteer of the Year & John Rossiter Memorial Youth of the Year Award
Alex Taylor is an exceptional Grade 12 student whose compassion, leadership, and lifelong commitment to community service have made a meaningful and lasting impact across Mount Pearl. From a very young age, Alex believed that giving back is both a responsibility and a privilege. Since the age of ten, he has consistently volunteered his time, energy, and musical talent to support individuals, families, and organizations in need, balancing academic excellence with an extraordinary level of service.
Music has always been at the heart of Alex’s volunteerism. Recognizing its power to bring comfort, connection, and joy, he has used his talent to uplift others in senior care homes, food banks, cultural organizations, community events, and commemorative ceremonies. His performances create moments of companionship and inclusion, particularly for seniors, and help ensure community gatherings and fundraisers are welcoming, uplifting, and meaningful. Alex believes music is a universal language, one that helps people feel seen, valued, and safe.
Alex’s dedication extends well beyond performance. He is the founder and organizer of the Annual Merry & Bright Christmas Fundraiser, now entering its seventh year, which has raised over $8,000 for organizations such as Bridges to Hope, The Gathering Place, Dollar A Day, the Janeway, and CNIB. He has also organized and performed in numerous benefit concerts for the Canadian Red Cross, raising thousands of dollars in support of disaster relief efforts related to floods, wildfires, and the war in Ukraine. One notable achievement includes organizing a wildfire relief concert in just four days, demonstrating remarkable initiative, leadership, and community awareness.
In addition to fundraising, Alex volunteers regularly with the Royal Canadian Legion, assisting with poppy campaigns across Mount Pearl. In recognition of his dedication and respect for service, he was chosen to lay a wreath at the 2024 Remembrance Day Ceremony on behalf of the Government of Canada—an honour he accepted with pride. He also volunteers with Sharing Our Cultures, food banks, and senior living facilities, contributing more than 40 volunteer hours each month while maintaining a 95% academic average in French Immersion.
Beyond service, Alex supports the sustainability of the arts community as a board member with Justin’s Musical Bridge, helping provide accessible musical opportunities for youth. His efforts have earned numerous recognitions, including the King Charles Coronation Medal for Community Volunteer, CNIB Volunteer of the Year, and multiple Focus on Youth awards. Despite these accolades, Alex remains humble and motivated by a genuine desire to help others. Allyssa Roberts – WINNER: Youth Opportunity Fund Volunteer of the Year
Allyssa Roberts is a dedicated and compassionate Grade 12 student whose consistent commitment to volunteer service has had a positive and lasting impact on both O’Donel High School and the Mount Pearl community. Known for her reliability, leadership, and genuine desire to help others, Allyssa has been actively involved in volunteer work throughout her high school years, giving her time generously to a wide variety of school‑ and community‑based initiatives.
One of Allyssa’s most meaningful community contributions is her ongoing volunteer service at the Ross King Memorial Public Library, where she commits weekly time to supporting children’s programming. In this role, she helps prepare and run events for families, organizes materials, maintains a welcoming space for patrons, and assists with recycling initiatives that support environmental sustainability. Her quiet dedication ensures programs run smoothly and that the library remains a positive, inclusive space for all visitors.
Within O’Donel High School, Allyssa has played an integral role in strengthening school spirit and community engagement. She is a valued member of the Welcome Team, greeting visitors, offering directions, creating posters, and assisting wherever support is needed during events such as craft fairs, arts nights, and school celebrations. Allyssa has also contributed to major fundraising efforts as part of the Relay for Life Sponsorship Team, where she reached out to local businesses, helped secure donations, and raised funds for cancer research, supporting events that raised thousands of dollars for vital causes.
Allyssa’s creativity and dedication are especially evident through her involvement in school musical productions. A long‑time member of the musical’s art and props teams, she has spent countless hours designing, painting, and constructing sets and props. Her work helped bring productions, including Grease the Musical, to life, enhancing the audience’s experience while fostering collaboration and pride within the school community.

She is also recognized as a natural mentor by peers and teachers alike, often assisting classmates and serving as a trusted student leader. Anderson Maher
Anderson Maher is an exceptional Grade 12 student at O’Donel High School whose academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to community service distinguish him as a true role model in Mount Pearl. A resident of the community and a dedicated Late French Immersion student, Anderson consistently demonstrates maturity, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility in all areas of his life.
Academically, Anderson is a high achiever with a proven record of success in advanced courses. He completed Grade 11 with an outstanding overall average of 94% and is currently maintaining a 92% average in Grade 12. His achievements include exceptional marks in senior‑level mathematics and sciences, such as 98% in Math 3200, 99% in Physics 2204, and 96% in Chemistry 3202. He continues to excel this year with mid‑90s averages in Math 3208 and Physics 3204. Anderson’s dedication and work ethic have earned him acceptance into Memorial University’s Engineering One Program, where he plans to pursue Mechanical Engineering.

Beibhinn Edwards – WINNER: Youth Visual Arts Award
Beibhinn Edwards is a dedicated and highly accomplished visual arts student whose creativity, versatility, and commitment set her apart as an emerging artist. Currently in Grade 12, Beibhinn has demonstrated exceptional skill across a wide range of artistic media, approaching each new project with confidence, curiosity, and a strong sense of personal vision. Brandon Philpott – WINNER: Youth Athlete of the Year
Brandon Philpott is an outstanding multi-sport student‑athlete whose achievements, leadership, and character have made him one of the most accomplished young athletes in Newfoundland and Labrador. A Grade 12 student at O’Donel High School, Brandon exemplifies excellence both in the classroom and in competitive sport, consistently balancing rigorous academic demands with elite athletic performance.
Brandon’s leadership is evident through nearly a decade of being selected by coaches and teammates as a Captain or Assistant Captain across multiple teams and age levels. He has served in leadership roles with the O’Donel Patriots High School hockey and ball hockey teams, the U18 AAA O’Neil Nissan Growlers, the Tricom Thunder U15 AAA team, and several Mount Pearl Blades and BNS Scorpions hockey teams during his minor hockey career. His leadership extends beyond hockey, as he has captained Mount Pearl Soccer Association teams for four consecutive years and led his Grade 9 team to a provincial championship.
Internationally, Brandon has distinguished himself as a world‑class ball hockey player. Since beginning the sport at the age of seven in Mount Pearl’s West Side United League, he has represented Newfoundland and Labrador at the Canadian Ball Hockey Nationals four times, earning multiple silver medals and a gold medal in 2023. He has twice been selected to Team Canada, capturing a World Championship gold medal in 2024 in a dramatic overtime victory against Slovakia, and he is set to represent Canada again on the international stage in 2026. At the national level, he has also been named MVP Forward at the Canadian U17 Junior Nationals and selected to the National All‑Star Team.

Brooklyn Cox
Brooklyn Cox is an accomplished young filmmaker whose creativity, leadership, and artistic vision have already made a meaningful impact on Newfoundland and Labrador’s film community. A Grade 12 student at Mount Pearl Senior High, Brooklyn has distinguished herself in the visual arts through her chosen medium of filmmaking, demonstrating professional‑level skills, maturity, and dedication well beyond her years.
Since beginning her filmmaking journey in 2023, Brooklyn has consistently challenged herself through ambitious projects across multiple genres, including horror, suspense, and deeply personal narrative films. Her work has been screened at notable local festivals and events such as Fog Fest and Huskies Follies, and she has created a powerful Remembrance Day short film that was shown in multiple schools. She is recognized for thoughtful composition, strong visual storytelling, and polished editing, each film reflecting a carefully planned artistic vision brought to life through technical skill and creativity.
Brooklyn is currently taking on her most ambitious project to date: the development of her first feature‑length film. She is actively involved in every aspect of the filmmaking process, including writing, casting, pre‑production, and planning for shooting. On average, Brooklyn devotes more than ten hours per week to filmmaking, often working after school on festival submissions, collaborative projects, or mentorship activities.
A natural leader, Brooklyn excels in the collaborative environment filmmaking requires. She confidently leads film sets, primarily working with peers and younger students, while fostering an inclusive and encouraging atmosphere. Beyond her own projects, she actively gives back to the creative community, teaching filmmaking to younger students, offering opportunities for others to explore roles such as writing, acting, composition, and technical production. Her leadership not only creates opportunities but also inspires others to take their own creative work seriously.
Brooklyn has also demonstrated a strong sense of social responsibility through art. Claire Gibbons – WINNER: Youth Athlete of the Year
Claire Gibbons is an exceptional multi‑sport student‑athlete whose talent, leadership, and commitment distinguish her as one of Mount Pearl’s most promising young competitors. A Grade 10 student, Claire has already achieved success across soccer, basketball, and cross‑country, excelling at the school, provincial, Atlantic, and national levels while maintaining outstanding academic performance.
In soccer, Claire has emerged as a dominant midfield player known for her work ethic, tactical awareness, and leadership. She captained the MPSA GU15 team to a provincial championship in 2025 and was recognized as the league’s Top Defender. That same year, she was awarded Female Athlete of the Year by the Mount Pearl Soccer Association. Claire represented Newfoundland and Labrador at the Atlantic Championships, earning a silver medal, and served as captain for one match. She also led MPSA at the National Soccer Championships, playing every minute of competition and helping her team limit the nation’s best opponents through disciplined two‑way midfield play. Her recent portrayal of Sandy in Grease (2026) showcased her strong vocal ability, stage presence, and emotional connection to the character. Previous lead roles include Dragon in Shrek (2024), Mal in Descendants (2022), and Betty Bakeapple in Jelly Bean Row (2021). She has also appeared in professional productions with Peter MacDonald Productions, including Scrooge (2022, 2024) and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2025), further demonstrating her versatility and commitment to performance.
In addition to musical theatre, Darcie excels in competitive performance. In 2026, she achieved first place in all four Kiwanis classes she entered: Vocal Concert Group, Folk Song, Piano Duet, and Piano Solo (18 and under), and earned second place in the Rose Bowl, an impressive accomplishment reflecting her musical discipline and dedication. In 2025, she was selected as the Next Gen Show Headliner at Trinity Hall, highlighting her growing reputation as a standout young performer.
What truly sets Darcie apart is her character. Despite her many accomplishments, she leads with quiet confidence and genuine kindness. She is a steady presence in rehearsals, supporting fellow performers, especially those new to the stage, with patience, reassurance, and encouragement.

Devon Fahey – WINNER: Youth in Community Safety & Well-Being Award
Devon Fahey is a compassionate and driven Grade 10 student whose leadership and commitment to community safety and well-being have made a meaningful impact at both local and national levels. Known for his empathy, curiosity, and positive attitude, Devon consistently demonstrates a strong desire to support others and contribute to healthier, more inclusive environments for youth.
As a competitive swimmer, Devon models dedication, perseverance, and teamwork. His upbeat spirit and encouragement of teammates earned him the Most Spirited recognition with the Marlins Swim Club. Beyond his own athletic pursuits, Devon gives back as a volunteer swim coach and through his involvement in initiatives such as the Cancer Swim for Hope fundraiser, where he helps raise awareness and support for important community causes. His presence in sport reflects his belief in its power to promote mental wellness, confidence, and belonging among young people.
Devon’s commitment to youth well-being extends beyond athletics into advocacy and leadership. Throughout 2025, he participated in a national youth program focused on healthy phone and technology use in schools. Emily Hounsell – WINNER: John Rossiter Memorial Youth of the Year Award
Emily Hounsell is an exceptional Grade 12 student whose leadership, perseverance, and commitment to community service make her a standout role model in the City of Mount Pearl. For more than 13 years, Emily has been an active and dedicated member of Girl Guides of Canada, beginning as a Spark in kindergarten and progressing through every branch of the organization. Through her long‑term commitment, she has earned every major award available at each level, including the Lady Baden‑Powell Award, Canada Cord, and Trailblazer Awards, reflecting both achievement and personal growth.
Emily’s involvement in Guiding extends beyond participation. As a Junior Leader, she mentors younger members weekly, helping to inspire confidence, curiosity, and continued engagement in Guiding. She has played leadership roles at district and provincial events, including leading activities, presenting sessions, running campfires, and supporting large‑scale camps and gatherings. Emily also serves on the Provincial Youth Forum, where she helps design challenges and plans an annual youth forum weekend attended by young members from across Newfoundland and Labrador. Falon McLoughlan
Falon McLoughlan is an exceptional Grade 11 student whose achievements in sport, academics, and community leadership have established her as a powerful role model in Mount Pearl and beyond. A dedicated and driven athlete, Falon is a deaf volleyball player who has reached elite levels of competition while consistently leading with humility, compassion, and purpose.
At just 14 years old, Falon was selected as the youngest athlete on the Canadian Deaf Women’s National Volleyball Team, representing her country on the international stage. She has trained across Canada and competed globally, including earning a silver medal at the 2024 Pan American Games in Brazil and placing 7th in the world at the 100th Deaflympics in Tokyo in 2025, the highest finish ever achieved by a Canadian women’s volleyball team at that event. Her success at the national and international levels is complemented by outstanding provincial accomplishments, including a silver medal at the 2025 Volleyball Canada National Club Championships, multiple all‑star selections, and prestigious honours such as the Robbie West Memorial Award, the Margaret Davis Memorial Award, and being named Athlete of the Year and Youth of the Year for the Focus on Youth Awards in 2025.
Despite the intense demands of elite training and international travel, Falon maintains exceptional academic performance, consistently achieving a GPA in the mid‑to‑high 90s. She balances rigorous coursework in mathematics and science with competition, training, and leadership development, reflecting remarkable discipline and resilience. Her long‑term goal is to pursue a career in medicine, inspired by her desire to support others and create positive change.
Beyond her athletic success, Falon is deeply committed to service and advocacy. She volunteers with the Pisces Swim Club, helping young athletes with disabilities learn to swim, assists in coaching junior high school volleyball teams, and supports adult athletes returning to sport through the Avalon Sport and Social Club. Falon is also a national and international ambassador for MED‑EL and HearPeers, where she supports families of children with hearing loss by sharing her experiences and encouraging inclusion in sport.

While their regular schedule involved approximately four hours of weekly league play, both athletes routinely committed additional personal practice time. After officially forming as a team in January, Andrew and Brady increased their training to approximately six hours per week, driven by a shared motivation to continuously improve and perform at their best. This commitment was reflected in their exceptional competitive results. Andrew and Brady placed first and second in house rounds, earning their place as Team Gold. Comprised of 20 dedicated students, this team represents a unique and highly valuable initiative, with only a small number of schools in the province offering a similar program in partnership with St. John Ambulance.
Each member of the group voluntarily completed full Standard First Aid and naloxone training, giving up an entire weekend preparing themselves to respond confidently and competently in emergency situations. Following their training, the students were organized into rotating teams to ensure continuous weekly coverage during the school day. On average, they respond to up to five calls per week, addressing a wide range of medical needs, including seizures, injuries, fainting episodes, panic attacks, allergic reactions, and concussions. In more serious situations, they work calmly and effectively alongside paramedics, providing critical information and support until emergency services arrive.
What truly sets the O’Donel First Responders apart is their readiness and selflessness. Members must be prepared to leave class at a moment’s notice, even during tests or presentations, to assist someone in need. This level of responsibility requires maturity, flexibility, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of others. Their presence brings reassurance and calm to stressful situations, allowing staff and administration to focus on broader student support.

In the weeks leading up to opening night, the group embraced an extraordinarily rigorous schedule, rehearsing up to fourteen hours a day to ensure the highest standard of performance across four full productions.
What stood out most was not only the students’ talent but their work ethic and collective mindset. Week after week, they arrived early, prepared, and fully engaged, even during early Saturday mornings and long rehearsal days. As the production progressed, many students took it upon themselves to rehearse independently outside of scheduled times, further demonstrating their passion and responsibility. When challenges arose, whether illnesses, absences, or complex technical demands, the group responded with empathy and teamwork, stepping in to support one another and ensuring no one was left behind.
Throughout the rehearsal process, the students grew significantly, both as performers and as individuals.
