Grass & Leaf Clippings

Mulching and composting leaves are earth-friendly ways to take care of your yard waste and save space in our landfill. Shred the grass and leaves with your lawn mower or a leaf shredder and use it as mulch on your lawn and garden.

Guidelines

The city will collect leaves and grass during weekly waste collection. Place your organic waste in paper bags next to your garbage cart. Remember to keep bags at least one metre from your garbage cart.

  • You can place an unlimited number of paper yard waste bags at the curb for collection.
  • Yard waste in plastic bags will not be accepted.
  • The weight limit for bags is 50 lbs.
  • Bags that have become saturated due to rain will not be collected.

Items not accepted include stumps, root balls, driveway and road sweepings, animal waste, dirt, rocks and noxious weeds.

Noxious Weeds & Invasive Plants

If you believe your grass clippings include noxious weeds or invasive plants, place them in a sealed garbage bag so they can be properly disposed of at Robin Hood Bay Landfill.

The following are considered Invasive Plants/Noxious Weeds in Newfoundland and Labrador:

  • Goutweed
  • Japanese Knotweed
  • St. John’s Wort
  • and more

For more information about noxious weeds and invasive plants, please visit the Government of Canada website.

Benefits

There are many positive benefits to the program, including:

  • Placing yard waste in paper bags outside the automated carts helps save space for your regular garbage.
  • This practice also promotes environmental preservation by diverting yard waste from landfills and extending its lifespan.
  • Additionally, it leads to financial savings by reducing the tipping fees charged by the Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility.

Your yard waste will be transported to the Robin Hood Bay Compost Facility. Additionally, you can also bring your paper yard waste bags to the Robin Hood Bay Residential Drop-Off year-round. For details on the hours of operation, please click here.

Compostable paper yard waste bags are available at most local hardware stores and building centers.

Christmas Trees

The Christmas tree collection takes place in January of each year. Residents are asked to place them on the curb on their household garbage collection day. Residents are reminded that trees must be free of ornaments, lights and garlands.
