Education for Children

The Mount Pearl school system is under the Eastern Regional District.The schools in Mount Pearl range from Kindergarten to Grade 12, and all children from age 6-16 are required by law to attend school. Most students graduate from grade 12 at the age of 17. Aside from the public school system, Mount Pearl also has one private school.

Post Secondary Education

Continuing a post-secondary education (college or university) generally requires a high school diploma.  Tuition fees for the publicly-funded post-secondary education system in Newfoundland and Labrador are among the lowest in Canada. University degrees can be pursued at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s or Grenfell College in Corner Brook.  You can prepare for a career in the marine industry at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University in St. John’s.  Arts and trades careers begin at one of 17 College of the North Atlantic (CNA) campuses, or at one of the numerous private colleges in the province.

Memorial University

Memorial University is the largest university in Atlantic Canada, offering more than 100 degree programs to a student population of 17,000.  Students can expand their horizons at one of two campuses in St. John’s, including the Marine Institute, one in Corner Brook and one in Harlow, England.

The Marine Institute (MI) is Canada’s leading centre of fisheries and marine training.  It is part of Memorial University of Newfoundland, and offers bachelors and masters degrees, one-year advanced diplomas, two-year and three-year diplomas and certificate programs.  MI is divided into three schools: the School of Fisheries; the School of Maritime Studies; and the School of Ocean Technology.

College of the North Atlantic

College of the North Atlantic (CNA) is one of the largest post-secondary educational and skills training centres in Atlantic Canada. They have many campus locations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and one in the Middle East State of Qatar.

There is also a range of private training institutions through Newfoundland and Labrador that offer many different programs of study.
